Flesh-footed shearwater

Puffinus carneipes

The flesh-footed shearwater breeds on a number of islands off the north-east coast of North Island, the Auckland west coast, Taranaki, and Cook Strait. The breeding population was previously thought to be between 25,000 and 50,000 pairs. Recent estimates are much lower, at between 6,500 and 10,500 annual breeding pairs. This species is not endemic, and also breeds in the southern Indian Ocean and off the coast of Australia. With its dark plumage, the flesh-footed shearwater may be confused with the sooty shearwater, but also with the dark Procellaria petrels.

Puffinus carneipes

Mean number of flesh-footed shearwater recorded around fishing vessels during counts carried out by government observers, binned to 0.4 degree of longitude and latitude. The size of the circle indicates the number of observations, whereas the colour indicates the mean number of birds recorded during counts. Empty circles indicate that no birds were observed. The grey areas indicate water depths of less than 1000 m.
