Fluttering shearwater
Puffinus gaviaEndemic to New Zealand, the fluttering shearwater breeds on many predator-free islands off the north-east coast of North Island, and also on islands in Marlborough Sounds. This species is very abundant in coastal waters, with a total population of at least 100,000 mature birds. The fluttering shearwater may be mistaken for the Hutton's shearwater or possibly the Buller's shearwater.
