Grey-faced petrel

Pterodroma macroptera gouldi

The grey-faced petrel is the subspecies of great-winged petrel that breeds in New Zealand. It breeds in numerous places around North Island. The breeding population is estimated at between 200,000 and 300,000 pairs. Being mostly dark in colour, it may be confused with the black petrel and the flesh-footed shearwater at sea.

Pterodroma macroptera gouldi

Mean number of grey-faced petrel recorded around fishing vessels during counts carried out by government observers, binned to 0.4 degree of longitude and latitude. The size of the circle indicates the number of observations, whereas the colour indicates the mean number of birds recorded during counts. Empty circles indicate that no birds were observed. The grey areas indicate water depths of less than 1000 m.
