Around the third of the global population of light-mantled sooty albatrosses breeds in New Zealand (less than 7,000 pairs annually), mainly on Auckland, Campbell, and Antipodes islands. The light-mantled sooty albatross is easily identifiable and confusion with other seabirds is unlikely.
