Fluttering shearwater

Puffinus gavia

Endemic to New Zealand, the fluttering shearwater breeds on many predator-free islands off the north-east coast of North Island, and also on islands in Marlborough Sounds. This species is very abundant in coastal waters, with a total population of at least 100,000 mature birds. The fluttering shearwater may be mistaken for the Hutton's shearwater or possibly the Buller's shearwater.

Puffinus gavia

Mean number of fluttering shearwater recorded around fishing vessels during counts carried out by government observers, binned to 0.4 degree of longitude and latitude. The size of the circle indicates the number of observations, whereas the colour indicates the mean number of birds recorded during counts. Empty circles indicate that no birds were observed. The grey areas indicate water depths of less than 1000 m.
